RE: Schley wheel bearing tool question...

I bought the complete set to do all VW's and Audis up until 1998 model year
from my local Mac tool supplier, total cost was about $280. At the time I
was working at the dealer and was using it al least once a week. So I felt
the cost was justified.

Does anyone know if this kit is available in the UK or how much it is in
the US.

The Schley kit that I have and use regularly has a horseshoe shaped plate
that fits behind the hub and sits on the strut housing, this gives the
bolts something to drive against without hitting the strut. Hence no
damage.

According to the instructions, the hub is pushed out of the bearing by
threading two long bolts through it so they push against the flat portion
of
the strut housing. IME, this works great on 4x100 and 5x112 bolt patterns
but on the 4x108 bolt pattern used on the non-turbo 5k, the bearing housing
extends outward far enough to interfere with the bolts so this approach
doesn't -- in fact, can't -- work...

Am I doing something wrong here and/or does this tool not work on these
struts and/or am I missing a part for it? Any BTDTs will be greatly
appreciated as I put my foot in my mouth and offered to do a favor for an
elderly couple who live down the street from me ... will I *ever* learn?
