Project 4ktq update
Ok, I'm well past due for an update.
Project 4ktq is coming close to completion. Anyone new to the
project, I'm putting a KH code motor from a 5kt (85') into the car. I
have an MC for it but upon the aquisition of a ur-q that needed a new
block, I decided the ur-q was more deserving of the MC motor. So the 4ktq
gets the KH.
Now, the lower end went untouched except for new oil seals, and
oil pan gasket for the 4kq oil pan. Block got painted with POR-15 which
looks great and hopefully will live up to its (almsot as strong as
powdercoating) reputation. Head was straightened, decked, with new
valve guides, seals, re-ground seats, and new injector seats and seals.
Motor got dropped in from the bottom with tranny already bolted
up. With a Floor Jack and 3 people (one manning jacka nd one on each side
of motor) it went very smoothly. One Engine mount bracket had to be
removed and then re-bolted on once the motr was in place but that caused
no problems. Tranny suppored with a Cinder Block untill it got properly
bolted in.
The engine is not runnign yet but hopefully (if the Audi Gods
shine on me) will run this weekend. It cranked over for the first time
last weekend and I'll get compression readings this weekend. But
initially, it pops and sounds good. We'll see. Hopefully all is good.
At least I did the head install right and didn't mess any valves up.
(first time on a 4-stroke) process was to put motor at Top Dead Center
(with flywheel marks showing) Position Cam Pulley to Top dead center mark
(little dot about 1/4" above head??? I figure thats about the thickness
of the valve cover.) Valves are shut on Cyl One at this point. And
install head. (Note, check gasket, I had the wrong one so its a good thin
I checked.
On the list for this weekend is to get the downpipe in and install
the CIS system and wiring hooked up. The under dash wiring is basically
done except for the light to pull the codes. (I'm ocnfused on this) I
though I just needed to wire the wire into a light socket like the OXS
light since its disconnected on my car. Then use the fuse to plug into
the relay to flash it. But there has been talk of needing a seperate
Intermittent switch to do this. why do i need this???
I had custom oil Lines made up for the Oil Cooler and I still need
a bracket made for this but that will come. BTW, two oil cooler lines with
much nicer ends than stock (Braided SS of course) ocst me about $60 from
Hoouse of Hose. I love having that place locally.
So far only question is whic Down Pipe will work better. 5kt Auto
or the 5ktq manual engined. i have heard the bends are slightly
different. i spose I'll jsut try both and see. :-)
Anyhow, thats where I stand.
Oh, only other questions so far if anybody get s thsi far in the message
is sensors for gauges. I have Oil Pressure, temp factory 4ks gauges that
I'd like to use. I believe temp gauge is ont he bottom of the front oil
pump. But Oil Pressure??? Is there a multi Function Press switch that
can go in place of one of the Hi/Low press switches??? There is a switch
like that on the ur-q motor for the gauges in the ur-q ABT display. (VDO
units.) Will this jsut cross over do you think???I can jsut try it but
its nice to know before I try troubleshooting.
Thanks everyone.
