I'll be happy to add copies of any other papers or learned discourses that
might be available ... as for the validity of the Chocholek paper, I'm
probably biased because I was able to discuss it with him directly rather
than just read it. There was absolutely no doubt in his mind that when used
as a center diff in an AWD car, the Torsen could distribute torque
inappropriately between the front and rear wheels under some conditions -- he
continually reminded me that the device is "dumb" and responds in a
predictable way to any given set of inputs -- but he was less certain about
how this would effect the handling of the car being driven at the limit or
what those conditions might be. As I recall, he said he'd have to think
about it before he'd commit himself to an answer but off the top of his head,
the "spider bite" phemonenon was definitely within the realm of possibilty
... he also said some company (Rover?) had tried it as a center diff and
rejected it because they didn't like how the car (truck?) handled with it.
For those who'd like to read more, I'm sure the lengthy post in which I
detailed the contents of my telephone conversation with the author is in the
archives somewhere...
Personally, I now approach Torsen discussions the way I do religous
discussions ... which is to say, I don't have them with anybody anymore. I
have my beliefs, supported by first-hand experience, and frankly, that's
enough for me ... I no longer feel the need to convince the world to adopt my
beliefs or even to defend them before it. :^)
