Brake Pads

I have an '88 5k FWD.  I'm replacing the front brake pads this weekend.
The Haynes manual for the car says that I need to replace the heat shield
when I do the pads.  I've looked at a friends Bentley manual for an 89-91
100 and it doesn't say anything about replacing the heat shields.  Does
anyone know if the heat shields do need to be replaced?  Also, how
difficult it this job?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my A/C question.  I'm gonna p/u a rebuilt
condensor.
