Alignment

000.5147.31.20 Bulletin 03/88:

"When making adjustments, try to attain the
specified values as accurately as possible."

The type of equipment that merely places a vehicle within tolerance is
_inherently_ unsuitable for aligning quattro drivetrains - ESPECIALLY
Torsen ones. Audi's instructions are really very clear on this, and
evidence of what does or does not happen on other vehicles including
race cars and Mack trucks is not relevant.

You have yourself pointed out the uniqueness of the centre Torsen
configuration - it should be obvious to you that the practices and
malpractices common in other configurations are not application.
This is a torque-shifting and hence a slip-shifting device - it is
VITAL that the axles have very similar slip reactions to input
torque. Absolutely VITAL.

And how you can describe a rear toe TOLERANCE of ten minutes of arc as
"a pretty healthy .. range" defeats my comprehension. There is indeed
a "spot on" - on an ur-quattro rear toe, it's exactly -5 minutes.
