Are you sure it was actually "wafting off the exhaust manifold" or was
that part just poetic license?  Because if you're smelling it inside the
car, dollars to donuts it's the heater core.  Then you also want new
hoses (3) and it is a really good time to replace the heater valve if
you like.  This is also a really good time to evaluate the rest of the
cooling system.
