Where is the higher force coming from?

Higher spring stiffness. If one spring is rated at 300 lb, it will
require roughly twice the dampening "force" of a 150 lb spring for the strut
to control it. Ask the Bennets who have destructed even Koni Yellows using
stiff race springs...these cars have nary any "suspension movement" by the
way.
