RE: '87 4kq engine noises

I have the save type of noise coming from my engine, especially on
deceleration. I just figured out that it is the play between the gears
where the cam drives the distributor shaft. A lister (sorry, can't
remember who it was) had suggested that I take a loooooong screwdriver
and hold the handle to my ear, and touch the tip to various parts of the
engine as it was running. If you have strange noises in your engine and
haven't tried this yet, do it, do it NOW! It is unbelievable how
clearly you can hear what's going on in there. I touched that
screwdriver to the distributor (keeping well away from the spark plug
wires!!) and it came across in plain English (with a German accent)
"help me there's too much play between my cam and distributor gears"
(grin)
