Also, sometimes it works to pinch the inlet/outlet hoses while it's
running and either feel the water motion with your fingers or
hear the pump sound change in response to the load change.
OTOH, a real advantage to removing it is that if the plastic
impeler housing has become brittle with heat aging, it will
probably crumble in your hands as you work with it.
