Re: Welcome to my nightmare --- more on new 5ktq clutch that slips
I called the friendly local Audi dealer and spoke with a confidence-
inspiring tech who said that:
1) The spring cage *should* face the pressure plate.
2) It is impossible to do it wrong on the 5ktq. If you flip the
disk, the spring cage will come into contact with the flywheel
bolts before the friction material can contact the flywheel.
Although he didn't have personal experience with this, he said
that he believed that the result of forcing this together
incorrectly would not be a subtle slipping of the clutch.
This matches my own experience as I have said before. As I installed
the disk per Bentley instructions, I thought I observed that this
could only go together one way. Although I have heard reports about
this happening on other models, resulting in a slip, I think this is
not the case in the 5ktq.
I also called Bentley to ask them to verify their information. They
will be in touch with me and I will report their statements here.
So, for the time being I would tend to believe that the figures and
text in Bentley are correct. Furthermore I am becoming increasingly
suspicious of the pressure plate. The aforementioned Audi tech
claimed that various Audi's pressure plates have the same bolt
pattern, with a range of stiffness. I am beginning to expect that
when I rip this apart again I will find that an incorrect pressure
plate.
The weather is nice so we may know soon enough.

PS: My apologies to David G. My "nightmare" pales compared to yours.
