Take the window frame off, according to my Audi mechanic mate.

Oh, and BTW- the late-model Audi door handles are a popular upgrade with
the Golf GTI brigade here- so popular that several tuning specialists have
come up with a fitting kit, i.e. a plate you weld into your door panel.
Most of them use the rear door handles and go remote-only for the locks,
for the clean look.
