We're into rebuild now, but as I said the stock cruise is going on to
replace the aftermarket one.

It took me a few brain cycles to understand the heater box.  The non-a/c
cars have three knobs - fan speed and air source, warmth and direction.
As the fan speed is increased, a secondary baffle is lowered to let
more external air in.  If the fan is off, no exterior air enters the
car.

This has been modified - air sourcing is now the responsibility of the
aftermarket aircon.  So this last Bowden cable (the one from the fan
switch) is missing.  Confused me for a while.  In its place is a
complicated little pantograph thing in obviously non-Audi plastic.
