Bum Shifter

To all;
If anyone has a sec I could use a quick diagnosis..........
the shift linkage on my 85 4000SQ, 5 speed has been "loose"
for a month or so, hard to get into 1st/2nd but last night
it "refused" to go into those gears and I had a hard time getting
it into reverse.  My guess is worn parts in the linkage,
crawled under the cat but couldn't see but one connection
and that looked ok.  Would like to have some info before I take it
to the shop?!
