I think Arden is mostly right in his assesment. It is true that the
cause of most speaker that are blow is due to very high levels of distortion.
It is just correletional that low powered amplifiers happen to be the ones
producing the distortion. High powered amps can cause just as much
distortion, but at such a loud level that they are rarely ever tested at
those levels. Conversely, over powering can blow a speaker just as easily if
it is not rated for the thermal loads it will be subjected. The voicecoil is
simply wire wound around a former and epoxied together. Heat from extremely
high power levels can easily melt this whole thing together if the speaker is
not intended for the power. Distortion has this same effect on speakers,
causing overheating of the voicecoil. Look at a distorting speaker sometime,
it is not a pretty site.
