Overheat light...I don't think I am

So just as I was thinking to myself, "gee, I am so glad I have a
quattro" as the first snow fell tonight, my car rewards me with a
problem. So it's like 35 degrees, snow is falling, climate control set
to 75 degrees, and the overheat light flashes. After only about 2 miles
from a totally cold start. Of course, now I regret not replacing the
sensor that feeds the temp gauge that does not work. Funny thing, I
parked it for maybe 20 minutes, and went out again, and no problem. Is
it fixed? Any ideas? The car did not display any signs of trouble other
that the idiot light. Oh, by the way, it's an 89 90q 10v.
