Re: What does 4E mean on a 4k?
In the U.S., the Audi 4000 4+E was a model introduced in about 1981. It
used the 4cyl engine (if memory serves it was the 1715cc version, not
the more entertaining 1588cc engine that preceded it) with a 5-speed
transmission -- in which the fifth gear was a deep overdrive, or
"Economy" gear, distinct from the original 1980 4000's 4-speed gearbox.
(Remember, this was while U.S. motorists were still quivering over gas
shortages and high fuel costs.) So the E in this case stood for Economy
-- all 4000s in the U.S. at least were equipped with CIS.
About the same time, Audi introduced a 4000 5+5, which had the 2.1L I5
and a 5-speed gearbox. It got very lukewarm reviews at the time (partly
because the 4cyl 4k had light steering and really superb handling, and
the heavier I5 upset the balance till they got the spring rates and
bushings right). It was replaced in short order by the Coupe GT, which
used the same powertrain with some handling modifications and of course
the very different roofline.
Funny that the question should come up, I passed a 4000 4+E on the way
to work this morning -- nice shape, silver, alloy wheels, on hwy 237
heading towards San Jose from Sunnyvale. Anyone we know? :-)
