CV Joint? Diagnistic help needed!

I'm in need of some diagnostic help ... this is on a '93 V8 quattro.

When I accelerate hard in first gear, I sometimes get a fairly loud
knocking noise from the rear of the car. Accelerating like this causes
the front to rise and the rear of the car to squat a considerable amount,
it almost sounds like something is hitting against a U joint of the
drive shaft when the rear of the car squats down.

The knocking is considerable faster than once per wheel revolution, which
makes me suspect the drive shaft rather than an axle's CV joint. I had
a CV joint fail on the Porsche once, and it made loud snapping noises under
hard acceleration in 1st, but at a frequency of once or twice per wheel
revolution. This noise the Audi's making is more of a knock than a snap,
and it only seems to do it when accelerating hard enough to squat the
back end down considerable.

Anybody got any thoughts, other than install stiffer springs? (Which
I may do anyway ...)
