done right, you can see around a 45hp increase. i dont know if that is in
conjunction with an exhaust and different intake (K&N, Jamex, Rammair) or
what, but i'll prolly find out this spring, as that route is the cheapest
significant HP increase out there. you could see (on a 20v) up to 225hp
(maybe).

Hmm, I don't know about that. That seems like the wrong direction to be
going with the 20V head (love to hear differing opinions). If you feel that
the top end is really pooping out on the 7A, then that would be the right
direction. Bigger valves will only soften the almost non-existent bottom end
even more. The 16v VW head is basically the same thing, and I have never
heard of anyone going to bigger valves-even in race motors. In fact, do you
even know of any bigger valves for that head?? It would be interesting to
ask Todd at what RPM that 45 horsepower comes in, remember, this is a street
car.
At Eurospec a few years ago they built a pretty beastly 7A- 2.6 liter
stroker, cams, port/polish, even higher compression, exhaust, and remapped
ECU. Unfortunately, I never got to see the car, but everyone there who drove
it said it was still a dog! The only increase was in the low end torque
range. They say that the car sounded awsome under acceleration, then you
would turn to see where the sound was coming from, and it looked like the car
was barely moving!
I was up at 2Bennett the other weekend, and one of the type 89 20v
coupes they maintain was there that had a 3B conversion. Running 25 psi they
estimate almost 500hp...cough, cought...ahem, excuse me. Now that is real
power, spools up at 2200 RPM and screams to the 7200 RPM limit. On the track
they say it is surreal to be in the car, passing other cars like they are
still-and this is with 17" street tires, eibach springs, and Bilsteins-
nothng fancy.
Remember, this is only a little 5 cyl in a big, heavy car. Its going to
be like very difficuly to make that 7A fast without a turbo...
