I believe it was shrapnel, plus huge smoke clouds on startup and
acceleration. Not to mention sluggish behaviour and low/no boost.

Naah, I know who diagnosed the car. He's OK, I don't think he'd try to
inflate the bill (he's just a mechanic who's proud of his work, just wants
to do a good job- not make his boss even richer. A rare specimen).
