A while back someone posted asking for suggestions on books to read to
familiarize themselves with their newly acquired (old) Audi. I just
came across a book called Chilton's guide to Turbocharges cars and
trucks at the library. Talk about a light bulb going off over your
head. This book gives really good generic info on how and why turbos
work, as well as details of turbo cars and trucks available up to 1984
(the book was published in 1984) It does have a section on the Audi
models available up to that time and makes a couple of interesting
points about the Quattro
1. describes it as the "quickest accelerating, fastest 4WD car you can
buy...even faster than a 454 powered 4x4 Chev Suberban" (talk about
comparing apples to oranges!!)
2. "the only 4wd sedan with an intercooler"
There is no mention of the 4k or 5k quattro, they have a picture of an
audi coupe and simply call it the quattro. The text implies that
"Quattro" is the model of that particular car
For anyone who has recently acquired a turbo Audi, or any other older
turbo car, I strongly suggest picking up this book to learn more about
your car.
BTW, there is also a section on turbo diesels (Audi also featured) and
they describe the differences in the I5 gas and I5 diesel, basically
that the I5 diesel is much beefier to withstand the diesel forces. I am
wondering if it would be worthwhile to look into modifying diesel I5
components (block, head, valves, etc) to a gas turbo in order to
withstand HUGE boost. Any ideas, comments?
