People do it I guess... btw, there are listers who have replaced autos
with standards - maybe one will have their old tranny you could use?

Argh. when the boots are torn, you have no time to play - replace at
least the boots immediately. The CV joints that "click" are shot and
need to be replaced (or, supposedly, rebuilt...) so they need more than
boots.

That sounds hideous.

They could sound awful and screw up the in gear performance, but I don't
think anything but the slush box could create the symptom you just
described. You could check out the linkage between the prndl selector
and the box, in hope of finding the "cheap fix", but I wouldn't count on
it.

Unless... if the CV joint(s) are good and *broken*, maybe they are not
even transmitting rotary motion any more? the outers take much more of
a beating, so try watching for motion at the half shaft (paint a stripe
on them, piece of tape or whatever, to make it easier to see) while the
car rolls (and grinds) - if the wheels are no longer "attached" to the
final drive then the CV(s) could/would be the culprit here.

But I doubt it...

PS if this is the case, stop rolling the car around! before something
else breaks.

PPS I don't think it is your "clutch" any more...
