I remember your question, Joe, and I thought there was quite a bit of
discussion about possible problems from bypassing a gear while upshifting
through the gears, although I don't remember any definitive description of
that move leading to any damages. Sounds to me like the syncros were on
the way out and now have "gone south" (or whichever direction you favor as
a negative).
Regardless, I'd think a junkyard tranny would make a lot more sense than
buying parts and installing them when you've never disassembled a tranny.
