Hmm, thanks Josh.  This answers my first question, "what is it?".
But, my 2nd question still stands, "why do I want one?".

Here's my take: point 1 above tells us what it does, point 2
claims smoother shifting (of an already silky shifter!), and the
other points claim that they haven't broken anything.

So, bottom line, to reduce shift throw by 1/5, say from 14 inches or
so (I'm guessing) to ~11 inches, for a mere $239?  No thanks, I'll
accept the extra milliseconds it takes me to shift, and put the money
towards something useful.
