ac/heater repair

Hey all.. my 86 audi 5000s has the heating/airconditioning computer all
jimmy rigged -- and I would like to get it fixed. When I bought the car,
it was already fiddled with, so Im not exactly sure if I would be able to
fix it (having never seen what it is supposed to be :)

Anyway: The main control console is pretty much only controlling whether
the blower motor is on or off. For temperature and ventilation I
have"manual" control -- that is, to adjust heat/cold I move a level which
is by the passenger (pulled toward passenger is heat, pushed in is
air-conditioning <it soulds like it is pushing a valve from side to side
when I adjust this>

to adjust which vent it blows out of is another contraption :>
Originally, it was two tiny hoses (like ones from a fishtank pump) -- when
they were connected to each other, i believe it blew out the main vents,
they were seperated, it blew out the defroster :) That since broke
<when my heater core was replaced by an ex-mechanic> and he replaced it
with a metal hanger-wire. If i push, it blows to the vents, pull and it
goes to the defroster :)

Now -- I am sick of all this mishagas... I would just like to have a
normal air conditioning and heater control unit. I found the units
themselves on ebay for under $50, so I am not concerned about that price.
But I would not even begin to know where/how to install it. (I am a
computer technician then a mechanic .. if its broken, I am
usually pretty adept at getting a part out and refitting a new one. But
to repair from scratch is probably beyond my limits>

Can anyone recommend a person (or mechanic..) in long island or upstate-ny
(binghamton) <or anywhere in between> that would be able to attempt this
at a moderate price? (Ps. how many hours should something like this
take? ) <Heck, if you've done it before and are willing to work with me
in person, Id be happy to pay fairly <and buy you all the beers afterwards
:>

Thanks!
