An interesting note to that point: I was trying to figure out the flakey
temperature gauge on my wife's Volvo, so I measured the resistance of
the sender while the engine ran. After the engine turned off, you could
watch the temperature swell (measured by a sender in the middle of the
side of the block). This is an '87 Volvo 240 with a crank-driven fan and
of course no aux pump. You can just imagine the coolant stopping in
place and heating up locally from the block.
This also explains why the after-run system usually turns on a little
while after the engine is shut off, I think, and sometimes turns on and
off a couple of times. Or so it does on my car.
