K24 finally installed in 1986 5000cstq
Last weekend was pretty good for my quattro.
I swapped the head for one without bent valves - another
instance of empirical evidence that the MC _is_ an
interference design.
Why were the valves bent? Well, the bolt holding the cam gear
to the camshaft worked out allowing the cam gear to fall off
the end of the shaft, so the camshaft stopped turning while
the crankshaft did not. A moment of silence, please, for
valves in cylinders 3 and 5. I torqued it properly and
utilized Loctite this time, so I hope it stays in place.
While I had things apart I did a few things I was putting off:
1. installed an all-metal Modine radiator
2. changed to Prestone Extended Life (orange) antifreeze
3. painted the valve cover red (sorry Huw, not yellow)
4. installed a k24 in place of the k26
5. new mutifunction sensor
Initial impressions of the k24 are very favorable, although
the effect is confounded with the effect of the red valve
cover.
Biggest PITA was removing a broken exhaust stud - luckily only
one broke.
