oil level increase

Sorry, folks. Have been away for the last couple of days doing a
driveshaft on my turbo. Turns out that many auto parts sources don't have
the correct parts and correct listings for 87- non abs, non quattro 5spd
turbos. I guess I ran the route of the 87.5 cgt. Whatever, 'nother email
will detail construction differences between auto and manual driveshafts.
It's really not what you think...auto shafts are larger!!!

About foaming from overfilling engine oil...that's a gross increase in oil
level above full. I won't go out on a limb and say that one has plenty of
room between the crank and the oil at full capacity, but there is an
additional amount of space to account for dynamic motion of the vehicle.
Add the customary 20% overengineering that I've noticed almost everywhere,
having taken apart and repaired many of these cars.

Possible turbo damage. They're implying the oil drain line from the turbo
being submerged in oil. Again, that level is still high enough to account
for dynamic motions of the body and to allow for adequate drain and defoam
before the oil hits the pan. Remember, the oil out of a turbo is full of
bubbles. Some vehicles have windage trays to further reduce risk.

Oil level while the engine is running: I can't exactly tell how much oil
is in the pan while the engine is running under vrious conditions. It is
not 4 quarts while the enigine is running. The impression I got from some
of the listers is that they overlooked the fact that the oil level is
lower while the engine is running.

The turbo drain line is in the block, above the oil pan, approx 1.5-2.0".
The crankshaft is a little above that mark (counterweights, I mean). A
small increase in oil level above "full" will result in maybe 1.5 quarts
being in the pan (under some conditions) rather than 1.0 quart. Pump
starvation is also limited through this.

For the listers who have tried this successfully, I'm pleased to give
advice from my own experience, or as I told Sean Dhanraj on the phone last
night,"I use my knowledge for the cause of good."
