more info was - very bad news

Thanks for all the advice!
I went to see my car again this evening (friday)after the sump had been
taken off. A bearing is knackered and a con rod bent. There's also
all the fragments of the old shell or whatever in the sump.
mechanic said it had obviosly been well looked after (which it had -
FVWSH) so got to ask why it failed - maybe combination of thin oil (5w 40)
and reving it over the 7k redline alot.

I've been told that the best thing to do is just buy another complete engine
since the cost of some of the things which may need replacing maybe high.
(surely the crank maybe damaged if a con rod is bent? - the bearing is also
scored).
Anyway listen to some of the prices I've found - all standard 16v engines:
1. 102k, 250gbp +vat and £45 delivery. with '3 mnth warranty'
2. 38k, GBP505 including VAT and del. - was 400 ex vat. (1 mnth warranty)
3. audi 2.0 16v out of M reg for £450 with 48k which is close enough to pick
up myself. Have some reservations if this will fit thou : its a tall block
so my ex manifold (magnex) may not have clearance and the in man. may be
over the wings. Also it has an ecu from the audi but the airbox/wiring will
be different and require mods with the transverse arrangement. I thought of
putting my in manifold on but someone said it won't wrk due to other parts
being different. - anyone more info on this? also it's debatable wheather
this engine will actually be as good as the stndard 1.8 16v. but with this
ecu the car will run on unleaded. - in the UK, normally with the 16v engines
, prob 20v, u need kstar or similar which is about 500 ukp for the TOTR
version!

I'd like to go for the 38k miler for the sake of the extra gbp150 ,
however.......both the vw engines have no history with the mileage figures
so I have to trust the breakers though they 'sounded' honest but this means
nothing. They also have no guarentee of the reg no aswell
Maybe 38k is just too low to lie about though? and with probability the
103k is genuine.
I know for sure that the 38k has been stripped of all it's bits but this is
good since all my boltons arein great shape.

which one if any do u think I should go for?
and does anyone have 1 for sale with preferably low mileage or know of an
honest breaker - I found both these in adverts in the UK vwm mag..

TIA.

Ed
