Re: Non Audi content - fastest SUV on earth...
Dave-
I don't have the specs offhand... but I fear you are mistaken. The Benz has
what, around 340 HP- my brother the car magazine freak insists it's not
much slower than a C5 Vette. I remember the figures on the Lambo LM only
partially. I know it had a detuned Countach 5.0 V12- 400 or so Italian
horses, smaller, it seems, than the German variety when it comes to
ratings- Porsches historically dyno *better* than rated HP, Ferraris come
up short (or at least used to, back in Enzo's day). I also know it had a
curb weight of well over 5000 lbs. Power-to-weight, it's not that strong,
but quick enough to be intimidating. Now for the anecdotal evidence:
One fine evening in January 1996, I was feeling proud of my newly acquired
5000CS turbo (R.I.P) and its 1.3 bar of boost (little did I know about
these at the time)... sitting at a stoplight on Hayden Road in Scottsdale
AZ (near the Airpark for the curious) I saw a familiar silhouette roll up
alongside- red LM002! With similarly testosterone-laden young feller at the
wheel (sheesh, must be rough to have one of those to drive in your late
teens!). Naturally, I blipped the MC in the time-honored gesture.
Blistering roar of V12 in return... green light came, off the line at 3500
rpm in my case. He wound it up pretty well, but never got more than a
half-car length on me until I began to pull ahead around 70mph. He kept it
up in the mirrors until I hit 115 indicated. I got out of the K26 and
coasted, was treated to the noise of one of those passing at 100 mph! Never
forget that stoplight drag... flame if you must, this was out in ex-exurbia
at 3 am. Point being, those Lambos are quick, but not that quick...
Regards,
Rob
