Well, Tamara attributes her '84 doing this to its needing an
alignment...

but my first guess would have ben busted alt belt or shot regulator
brushes.  But you say, the battery was batterying.  In these scenarios
it would not have been, it would have been running the car on its own. 
Well, the electric parts, anyway.  IE your voltage would have been 11.5
and dropping slowly...
