Hello

I'm new to actually subscribing to this list, but have been reading the
archive for quite sometime. I have a 1990 100 quattro sedan, and must
confess as much as I love the car (it is fun to drive), it's killing me.

I bought it used last year with 74,000 miles on it. It now has 108,000 miles
on it, and it's been a black cat as far as previous vehicles is concerned.

The green paint has lost its clearcoat on the trunk and hood, and now on the
trunk, it's losing hue as well. Is there anything short of repainting that
can be done for it? Is this a common problem?

I only paid $3000 for the car, but when I purchased the 100q it needed a
blower motor ($400 there) and a headliner ($150). A few months later, it
needed a completely new A/C system ($1500). Today, the front wheel bearings
went out, and I spent $500 on them.

It's on its second auto transmission and differentials, but both were
replaced by the previous owner under warranty.

What is the danger in driving the vehicle with a dead bomb? The bomb
definately needs replacing (according to various FAQs), but there is no
noticable problems in even emergency situations--the car performs marvelously.

I may also need a new hydraulic pump...a few months ago, I was short on
fluid. I refilled it and a month later it was low again (the brake light
stayed on). It's been 3 months, and it is still near the "max" line. But
upon refill, I noticed some hydraulic fluid setting on the hydraulic pump
itself. Any clues here?

What should I be expecting as far as gas milage? I'm getting 20 mpg on
strictly city driving, 25 on strictly highway, and 23 in mixed.

Anything else that I can expect to go wrong or should know about? I really
do love my car--the handling at higher than legal speeds is breathtaking and
it is a truly comfortable car. And despite the paintjob, it's a beautiful
car--especially inside. I hope to drive this car for the next 3 years or so!

Thanks for the help, and thanks for the hospitality!
