AC Head Switch R&R
Bob,
I was able to do my AC Head switches today at lunch, here'sthe write-up.
Pre- maintenance Symptoms: switches only occasionally worked to switch
between modes.
Tools Required: 1 15 Ml bottle of Stabilant 22A, 1cuetip, 1 butter knife, 1
audi screwdriver (thin blade + phillips)-Glue - for circuit board back.
The sequence was as follows:
1.The butter knife did a good job of popping off the cover. Stick it in at
the middle of the sides of the cover and "bend" the knife away from the AC
head.-Be brave.
2.Use the Phillips to remove the head holding clips.
3.Use the thin blade to pry off clear plastic cover and thin plastic layer.
4.Use the thin blade and fingers to pull front of head from multipin
straight connector.
5. Usethe thin blade to pry circuit plate from switch assembly cover. (this
involves popping some plastic Glue?buttons covering metal pins fron the
circuit board) - be gentle so as to not bend the circuit board.
Caution: Don't pull it apart until you have the assembly over a table or
other surface to collect the parts.
6. Gradually pull apart the circuit board (with fingers- and gentle prying
with the thin blade)from the switch assembly
-set aside the plastic switch holder all the push button and the 3 button
levers (from the warmer, colder and outside temperature switches
- don't lose the 3 little plastic buttons which go between the levers and
the switch.
-Lift off the grey rubber switch assembly and carefully set aside.
7. Apply stabilant to cue tip and generously coat the circuit board
switchcontacts(theylook like copper squiggles - one for each switch
position.
8. Carefully align the grey rubber switch holder and put onthe circuit
board.
9. Reassemble all the sitch buttons and levers andput the 3 plastic buttons
inplace.
10. Carefully turn the curcuit board over -align it withthe black plastic
button assembly and press the metal pins - popping them in place. Use your
fingers on one hand to hold the assembly together.Warning they won't stay
together by them selves anymore - unless you glue them -don't worry you'llbe
ok without the glue.
11. Use the other hand to inset the black traslucent plastic and clear
plastic sheet. Slide the plastic under the top taps and press the bottom
down to clip in place.
12. Extend the wire from the AC head holding the multipin connector as much
as possible and connect it.
13. Put head - back into place and use phillips screwdriver to screw in
holding clips.
14. Use hand to pop cover back on.
15. Turn on ignition and try the switches-they all work!
Total time -about 35 minutes - including figuring out the above steps as I
went.
Problems... Now the Degrees Celcius/ degrees F switch isstuck in Deg F
position?!? Itworked fine before... oh well I can live with this problem.
Best regards and thanks to the list for help as always.
PS I sold my 86 5000CD quattro tonight 369,000 km for $2500 CDN plus$250 for
