Richard, the shorting sensor is located on the left side of the block
(sitting in the car) on the lower side of where the radiator hose goes into
the block. One sensor above, one sensor below a T that also houses the
thermostat. Water has collected in the rubber (worthless) boot and is
causing your problem. Also check the connection at the coolant overflow tank
sensor for the flashing light.
The car does start and idle poorly, but it did that before I washed the
engine.
Vacuum leaks gave me these symptoms last summer. Check crankcase breather
line (below distributor, lower part of block) and big black boot from fuel
dist. to throttle body, especially the bottom.
