Thanks : 88 80Q Broken Bleeder Screw
Thanks to all who responded to my broken bleeder screw
questions. I did talk to my mech about possibly removing
the broken portion through drilling it out but he said that
it was far too broken inside...whatever that means. I
will try to talk to him today or tomorrow in person and pass
on some of your suggestions when my car goes back for the
MC job. He's a good mech, BMW and Toyota certified who
worked at a dealership and is now on his own and only works
on imports unless under special circumstances. He usually
does a lot of freebies on my car and is always open to listen
to suggestions plus I get to a 10% student discount on labor.
So far I'd say he's the best around here and almost all my friends
have since switched to him since he opened here, plus he'll
let you bring your own parts if you so wish.
The bleeder screw was already broken, I'd seen it before but
never really knew what its role was. Thanks Nathan, for the tip
on the caliper. My mech. had gone ahead and ordered an Audi
Caliper for $70+ and hopefully with it being a special order item,
it will be exchangeable or returnable for the less $ Jetta GLI (Girling
54) caliper. I did pass the information on to him. I had asked my
mech to see if he could change the MC still, but he said that he
didn't want to expose the new MC to the current fluid (whose age I have
no clue to), and that he couldn't possibly flush the system with just
three brakes because super blue which I am switching to is not
compatible with regular DOT4 ( Fred, your idea about bleeding the
system at the flex hose connection would have worked if I wasn't
switching over to the Blue stuff). I will however try and get him to
try and drill out the screw if it is at all possible.
I ended up going on my 1600+ mile journey this past weekend.
I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed by my 80Qs
performance throughout the trip....not one hint of underperformance
even with 166K on the clock. It lived up to expectations in 3rd 4th
5th very stable....kept up with a new 3-series on the way back
but the other driver with a NY license plate managed to do a maneuver
between two vehicles and lanes and was long gone leaving me stuck
between two slow moving vehicles. No oil consumption, no flickering
engine light ( previous problem), just no problems.....just made me
really appreciate what I have.
