In the handy dandy VW/Audi "Engine code letters - kW/bhp" book
(000.7155.35.21 1/1997) it reads:

I found it interesting that they list an overlap from 01.85-07.85 between
the two.  I guess the only way that you can tell for sure would be to look
at the serial number on the block!
