I think the problem is on the other side of the steering wheel.  Sounds
more like the drivers feeble attempt at an excuse, since the gauge
probably was reading empty, and the "gas pump" warning light is
independent of the "miles to empty" function.  Trust your gauges above
all the bells and whistles, as ole sarge used to say in flight school.
