Re: Outside Mirror Glass, '88 5KSQ
Hi Christopher;
In '89 Audi changed the glass mounting system from a clamping ring to a
snap-on mount. There are four plastic clips at each corner of the mirror
which snap onto pins on the motor driven gimbal. The best way to release the
mirror is to drive it to the extreme corner position and pop each clip with
a thin-bladed screwdriver (i.e. maximum down and maximum left will open up
the upper right corner - you can look in and see the clip).
I have used the '86-'88 glass on the '89-'91 mirror assemblies, but I
don't know if it works the other way around.
The older glass is better made and more durable than the '89-'91 glass -
the later glass separates from the silvering, evidenced by a brownish stain
moving inwards from the edge of the glass.
