RE: Turbo/wastegate questions - K24, WG Spring etc. - follow-up

I did it! Installed a "Charlie" spring. Is was so easy I'm embarrassed for
posting the question of difficulty. This was comparable to changing spark
plugs in level of difficulty.

I installed one of Charlie's 1.6 Bar springs - I was going to install this
in the '86 I sold, and Charlie sent it to me before I could tell him i sold
the car. So I put it in the wagon just for kicks, and will defer the 1.8
bar SJM spring 'til later.

Results are about as predicted. I am getting much more feeling of low-end
torque and boost definately comes on at lowere RPMs. It is quite a bit more
controllable than before, and I found that I could actually control the
amount of boost until over 24 PSI and detonation would start to occur. I
know that this is not good and will back off on the regulator which controls
the wastegate.

I found I was getting so much torque, that it seemed the clutch would start
to slip in 5th gear at highway speeds if i wasn't careful. Looks like i've
created a monter that needs to be tamed.

For those considering this approach, I would not disable the fuel pump
cutout per Charlies instructions, but use some other method. I aquired Paul
Timmermans "Knob" which is a resister ECU and pressure regulator combined
mod. This now coupled with the spring seems to do the trick quite well.
Before the spring the boost came in too late and then too much.

If i had to do it all over again and had the money to spend up front, I's
probably go with SJM's modifications, as I am probably coming close to that
cost, and a chip mod has definate advantages over the resistor mod.

Anyway, this is my "qualitative", "seat of the pants" assessment of this
combination of DIY mods i have done thus far.

Next for the car will be concentrating on baking and handling, and probably
then leaving well enough alone for the time being as i get the 4000 Q
driving like new(or hopefuly better).

Thanks to everyones feeback and dissertation on this subject, as it has
definately increased my understanding. i hope i didn't start a "Boost Wars"
thread. and at this time I would still have to revert to my original
statement that ' I still have much to learn about forced air induction."

Cheers,
