5 cyl. not running right

Hello List:

My 85 CGT is not running right. Here are the symptoms:
- cranking the motor for about 3 minutes gets it started, but it
backfires
- only runs smoothly from about 3-5K
- I can drive the car but with the engine at idle or no load, it stalls
immediately
- gets bad fuel economy
- these problems started this evening when I noticed that while cranking
the motor, it sounded like it backfired, jumped, or something broke.
Everything looks fine.

The rotor and cap are new, the fuel system is fine (I think - no leaks).

I am wondering if maybe the timing belt skipped a tooth, since it has
216,000km on it.

Any ideas?
