Whoa there!  You can experiment on _my_ 87 4kcsq that _needs_ the heater
core exchanged :).  Sigh, if we were only neighbors.

A few guesses:
1) Makes the coolant "swirl", thereby increasing heat exchange in the
core.
2) Keeps the tab in the flow so you do not have to push through with
excessive force to close it off.
3) AoA couldn't get it to stop leaking without leaving the tabby thing in
there partway.

Heh... okay, maybe I haven't had _ANY_ coffee yet this morning!
