RE: Audi to do a CVT Transmission?

A while ago a team was testing as protype CVT. FIA baned its use in F1 befor they could put it to use.

Audi has a page at their world site that covers the transmission fairly
well. I found it very interesting.

Subject:	Audi to do a CVT Transmission?

I don't recall seeing any posts on this topic yet. A week or
so back I read
an article in our local paper's auto section about Audi
developing a CVT
(continuously variable transmission) for the A6 with the 2.8
V6. Apparently
this new design CVT is capable of handling the larger torque
loads in the
larger (than say a small scubie-doo or adnoh) car. It is
reported that cars
equipped with this thing will actually be quicker than those
with a manual
trans ('till it grenades I'm guessing). There is a 6 speed
sequential mode as
well for those who still wish to shift. My guess is they are
a long way off
from developing one of these that handles any kind of
serious power. (After
all, if such a thing were possible, F1 teams would be all
over it.) Just an
interesting tidbit to break up the crash/physics
discussions...
