Hello everyone,
Got to say, I enjoyed all the input on the "which car?"
question. I was considering 200tq, ur-Q, MC'ing the CGT, and
whether or not to keep the Coupe as a second car...
Great answers. Among the responses I got:
Porsche 951
4ktq
CGT + 200tq
MC ur-Q
ur-Q or E30 M3 or M6 or 190 2.3 16 or Turbo Miata
MC CGT + ur-Q
and I think you know who you are (grin)
Hmmm. I've done some more thinking. The 951 idea: I dunno.
I'm a single younger guy with few outside responsibilities-
now is the time for a Porsche if ever. But that is exactly
why I won't seriously be considering that idea- insurance!
Ouch...
Beyond that: Image. I'm hard pressed to say why, exactly,
but M cars and Porsches present an image at odds with how I
see myself... they are great performance machines, I envy
their owners- but I just can't see myself in one. I'm a
little more "earth tones", I guess.
Besides: Don't 24v BMW sixes and Porsches have parts costs
to shame an '85 ur-Q? (We charge more for *labor* on these
at work, even)
WRT buying someone else's hybrid:
If the going rate for a 4ktq is $7500 as per recently, I
wouldn't think of going this route unless I rolled my own,
so to speak. That's getting near '91 200 20v money, even.
WRT ur-Qs:
Thoughts of burned valves and the finicky WX engine fill my
mind- it was always my intention to MC the ur eventually,
anyway, but the prospect of putting up with some of the
stories I've heard... give me pause, at least for now. Now,
if I found one at the price Mike Williams found his, OTOH
(grin)
How I arrived at the 6 series BMW as alternate:
As I said before, the climate has no bearing on my Quattro
Question. I've thought this was one of the nicest looking
cars of its or any other era, ever since I saw the silver
one on Moonlighting (remember that show?? shame what Bruce
Willis did to finish that CSi off on-screen though). It also
plays off nostalgia for the '74 Bavaria I had freshman year
at college- which I bought after I didn't respond quickly
enough on a ur-Q for sale (Tom Juliani's now...)Hmmm, this
quandary suddenly seems to be much longer-running than I
thought it was.
Understated style goes a long way towards impressing me. The
car I saw several years ago in European Car sums up about my
ideal ride: '72 BMW 3.0CS, with suspension, driveline, and
powerplant from '88 M5! My Audi equivalent: I wish for a 20v
ur-Q- cloaked in standard '85 Coupe bodywork- how's that for
the sleeper with flair? Hell, I can't count the number of
times Honda-racer types have called my Coupe a "rally
Quattro" or something along those lines- guess it cuts both
ways (grin)...
If I'm mistaken on upkeep costs for some of the beasts this
discussion has brought up, let me know. My research often
isn't as thorough as it oughta be...
Trying to avoid racks, bombs, burned valves, and angry key
scratches on the flanks,
Rob
