Used A4/Passat Q's

I have a friend of mine who is in the market for a used (1998-99) A4/Passat 
and has a few questions such as:

What should he look for mechanically on either the 1.8t or V6 engines? 
Anything special? Heating systems? Windows? Whatever?

Has anyone out there bought one lately and what were the mech. problems with 
the cars and what type of cost ranges were you seeing on the market?
