Re: 5kcstq questions (LONG)
Hi Chris
I faced many of these same issues with both an 85 5kt(non q) and an 89 200tq.
Both were not properly repaired/maintained by p/o. I now have the Ate atom
grooves w/Axxis pads (MetalMasters). I like them for daily driving but are
dusty. Previously had Brembo rotors from Italy and the surface metal
literally ripped off these rotors.
As for the shimmy under braking, you're right on about the suspension. (BTx2)
I just replaced everything at one time. There are many sites that have good
prices and service. The Parts
Connection(http://www.thepartsconnection.com/audicat.htm) is a great site
that has all p/n's and intermodel compatability. Rod offers good service and
fair prices. Blaufernugen (http://www.audiquattroparts.com/) offers lots of
parts and expertise, including complete model "kits" for items like
suspension that include all items needed. Lately I've been using Import
Parts Specialists (800-897-7278) in Idaho. So far for me they have had the
best prices on almost every item, sometimes by a large margin, and they will
deal further if they can. I have no connection with any of these sites, and
learned about most of them from other recommendations on the list. I would
say to avoid any "no-name" or "universal" type parts; stick with OE for most
items. Do you have a Bentley manual? They are the best auto manuals I've
ever used and the list was right on when they said to get them, although at
first I balked at the price. The suspension and brakes are pretty
straightforward if you're a decent mechanic. Mostly it is just remove and
replace. My first alignment the guy didn't know how to loosed the tie-rod
ends and didn't have a large 21 or 22mm combination wrench. I prelubed and
loosened them and brought the wrenches when I went and otherwise it went
well. He had one of those $30k Hunter Compuliners (brand new) that
practically does the alignment for him. I have been super satisfied with the
work I did and I think you will really appreciate the difference it will make
on your car too!
Good luck with whatever you choose to do
