Re: Bose blowups
I've put up a web page (with photos provided by Phil Rose) presenting some of
the information gathered to date on the Bose rear speakers in the '91 200q20v
sedan. These speakers include an integrated circuit board/amplifier that has
a tendency to fail. Failure may include noise, shorting, smoking, and/or
fire, and has led to the loss of several cars. To date, no personal injury
has been reported. I would recommend that any Bose equipped Audi of the '91
vintage (or thereabouts) disconnect the rear speaker units until we identify
which vehicles are at risk. If you do not disconnect the speakers, pay close
attention to any unusual sounds (or odors) from the rear speakers.
Audi and Bose have each been contacted... hopefully this will be resolved in
the near future.
