Configurations, MIPS, MSUs - IBM z9BC

The successor to IBM's z890 system is the IBM 2096 z9 Business Class, which is discussed here. The z9-109 is effectively renamed the 2094 z9 Enterprise Class and has its own MSUs and MIPS page.

The 2096-z9BC is further subdivided into two hardware submodels:

• z9 BC R07 - with eight instruction processors, three characterisable for operating systems and four for speciality engines - one SAP and no spare IPs
• z9 BC S07 - with eight instruction processors, four characterisable for operating systems and three for speciality engines - one SAP and no spare IPs

These MIPS values are only approximately comparable with the MIPS values given for earlier systems because they are based on the performance of the z9 - which uses a markedly different processor design to earlier systems. Correct comparision of an earlier system with a 2096 requires factoring in the workload performance differences between the earlier system and the 2096. There are other tables on the Internet. There is no single numerical factor that can be applied to make this conversion.

As with previous generations of zSeries, 2096-z9BC MSUs will reflect approximately 10% more MIPS per MSU than z890 MSUs.
