Audi ur-quattro alternator brush replacement
Parts required:
- 049 903 515C Brush set (also Bosch 1 127 014 022-850)
Procedure:
- Lift vehicle on ramps or stands and secure
- Note radio codes and disconnect battery
- Remove front right undertray
- Remove rear cover from alternator - 8mm
- Remove regulator from alternator - cross-head screws
- On a bench, file the soldered protrusions on the back of the brush assembly flat
- With a good centrepunch, mark the centre of each
- Drill out the centre of each protrusion (3mm)
- Remove the old brushes
- Using a wire brush or steel wool, clean the area around the drilled holes
- Place the provided crimp collars in the tops of the holes
- Thread the solid wires attached to the brushes up through the collars
- With the last section of the solid wire in the collar, crimp it to hold the brush wire
- Using a heavy-duty soldering iron, solder the collar and wire to the assembly
- Refit
It is normally not necessary to disturb the alternator belt adjustment. However, if this is done remember that the alternator adjustment strap pivot bolt on the front of the block is often an oil pump securing bolt - if it is not retightened after adjusting the alternator belt, an oil leak is inevitable.
