When checking the oil level the vehicle must be on a level surface. After stopping the engine wait a few minutes (at least 3) so that the oil can drain back into the sump.
Note: Older K-Jetronic engines sometimes suffer from injector leakage that results in fuel contaminating the oil, especially if the vehicle is used for frequent short journeys. When such vehicles are then used for a long journey, this fuel contamination can be boiled off leading to what is sometimes assumed to be sudden oil usage. For this reason, the oil level should be checked after the first hour of continuous driving.
If the oil is drained off and not sucked out with suction devices VAG 1307 or 1358, fit a new washer on the drain plug. Engine capacities including a filter change:
Petrol Engines: | Litres |
---|---|
1.8<>3.0 | |
2.0/2.2/2.4 | 4.5 |
Diesel Engines: | Litres |
2.0 | 5.0 |
2.5 | 4.5 |
Oil drain plug torque | |
---|---|
1.8 litre engines | 30 Nm |
From 2.0 litre engines | 40 Nm |
Note: if the oil cooler is removed and drained, it will not fill until the oil filter bracket thermostat opens. If a drained oil cooler is fitted and the engine is filled to the dipstick mark, the oil level will drop significantly when the oil cooler fills. A quantity of oil should be taken on the first test drive and the oil level should be checked again once the engine is warm.
