Removing and refitting the cylinder head

15-702 Removing and refitting the cylinder head

  1. Check engine block bolt holes are clean and free of oil (danger of hydraulic lock)
  2. Check head bolts - solid lifter bolts are 98mm long, hydraulic lifter bolts 96mm
  3. Check that both cam and crank are aligned at TDC#1 before mating the head to the block.
  4. If VAG 3070 is available, screw the pins into holes #9 and #10.
  5. Place cylinder head over pins, screw remaining ten bolts in loosely, remove the VAG 3070 pins with the extractor.

15-239 Tightening the cylinder head bolts

  1. Cylinder head bolts.
    • Tighten in stages in the sequence shown in the figure with engine cold:
      • Stage 1 - 40Nm
      • Stage 2 - 60Nm
      • Stage 3 - 180°
    • Two successive turns of 90° are permissible. Use a rigid wrench or protractor
