Removing and refitting the cylinder head

- Check engine block bolt holes are clean and free of oil (danger of hydraulic lock)
- Check head bolts - solid lifter bolts are 98mm long, hydraulic lifter bolts 96mm
- Check that both cam and crank are aligned at TDC#1 before mating the head to the block.
- If VAG 3070 is available, screw the pins into holes #9 and #10.
- Place cylinder head over pins, screw remaining ten bolts in loosely, remove the VAG 3070 pins with the extractor.

- Cylinder head bolts.
- Tighten in stages in the sequence shown in the figure with engine cold:
- Stage 1 - 40Nm
- Stage 2 - 60Nm
- Stage 3 - 180°
- Two successive turns of 90° are permissible. Use a rigid wrench or protractor
