The system is filled at the factory with a mixture of water and G11 antifreeze/corrosion inhibitor.

This protects the system from frost and corrosion and prevents scaling. The additive also raises the boiling point of the water. In vehicles with an electric auxiliary water pump (MB and RR ur-quattro, late KG and all 1B Audi 200s, MC-2 Audi 100s) it is imperative that the vehicle is never run on pure water without additive.
In countries with a warmer climate the higher boiling point of the coolant mixture is an aid to reliability in service.
For these reasons it is strongly recommended that G11 (or equivalent) additive is used on all cars throughout the year.
